North American Safe Boating Campaign   

The North American Safe Boating Campaign is a yearlong effort in the U.S. and Canada focused on spreading the message of boating safety and the critical importance of always wearing a life jacket each and every time on the water. The campaign also reminds boaters of the importance of boating responsibly, such as taking a boating safety course, never boating under the influence, using an engine cut-off device and knowing navigational rules.

The annual campaign kicks off the weekend before Memorial Day with National Safe Boating Week and continues throughout the year. The North American Safe Boating Campaign is produced under a grant from the Sports Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

  • National Safe Boating Week (May 20-26, 2017): From family friendly events at marinas to vessel safety checks, this week is packed with life-saving messages about responsible boating. National events during this week are Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day and Ready, Set, Wear It! Life Jacket World Record Day.
  • Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day (May 19, 2017): This is a fun opportunity to educate coworkers or building mates about the proper life jacket for them, different styles, and how to use an inflatable life jacket by wearing your life jacket to work! Participants are encouraged to take a picture of themselves in their life jacket while at work and post it to the Ready, Set, Wear It! Facebook page or submit directly to the NSBC at outreach@safeboatingcouncil.org. Participants are also encouraged to tweet their picture using #RSWI2017.
  • Ready, Set, Wear It! Life Jacket World Record Day (May 20, 2017): Thousands of people from around the world attempt to set the world record for the most life jackets worn and inflatable life jackets inflated on one day. These events are photographed and documented to record how many people attended and wore their life jacket (verifed by the NSBC). The record to beat this year is 10,917.   • Operation Dry Water (June 30 - July 2, 2017): Supported by the North American Safe Boating Campaign, this nationwide BUI education and enforcement initiative launched in 2009 by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators in partnership with the United States Coast Guard.   • Wear It! Life Jacket Pledge: This is a great way to show your dedication to boating safety. Pledging to always wear your life jacket will serve as a great reminder to yourself and to those around you. Begin the pledge now!

Featured Public Service Announcement: 'Silly Humans'

"Silly Humans,” featuring Shaw Grigsby, Bassmaster Elite Series Angler and host of “One More Cast” on The Sportsman Channel follows two fish who think they are smarter than some humans. But they are no match for an accomplished angler who boats responsibly and wears a life jacket. “If you’re not a fish, you’ve got to wear your life jacket,” reminds Grigsby.

This PSA has received several awards including recognition by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals and Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts Communicator Award.

Annual Awareness Survey

The Awareness Study is our annual effort to measure the success of the campaign. In 2016, we found that "Boaters who are aware of the Wear It! campaign are significantly more likely than those who are unaware to wear their life jackets 'always or most of the time' " and "Top two main barriers to using life jackets are, discomfort and no legal requirement to wear one."

In 2016, the Annual Awareness Survey was honored with an Honorable Mention award in the Research & Measurement category of the Platinum PR Awards.
