August 29, 2019: National Safe Boating Council Identifies Top States for Boating Accidents and Shares Safety Reminders for Labor Day

The National Safe Boating Council has identified states with the highest number of accidents and fatalities in 2018, based on the U.S. Coast Guard Recreational Boating Statistics released this week. There were 633 deaths, 2,511 injuries and approximately $46 million dollars of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents.

The U.S. Coast Guard's 2018 Recreational Boating Statistics are now. Quick takeaways: Compared to 2017, the number of accidents decreased 3.4%; Alcohol use continues to be the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; Top five primary contributing factors in accidents ranked are operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, machinery failure, and excessive speed.

July 8, 2019: New Fishing License Study Shows R3 Drives Increases

The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) today released an analysis of state and national trends in fishing license sales confirming the effectiveness of R3 efforts on growth. The research, done in partnership with the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and carried out by Southwick Associates, looks at license data and participation rates over a 25-year period.

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s recently published annual summary of boating accidents in Arkansas, people who spent time on the water last year saw a 9 percent decrease in boating accidents and a 36 percent decrease in the number of boaters who died from boating accidents.

December 10, 2018: Congress Passes New Engine Cutoff Switch Requirement

Boats under 26 feet will have to include engine cutoff switches, thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Authorization just passed by Congress.The Frank Lobiondo Coast Guard Authorization of Act of 2018, among other things, has a provision requiring “manufacturers, distributors and dealers” to install engine cutoff switches on new boats “less than 26 feet overall in length and capable of developing 115 pounds or more of static thrust.” The engine cutoff switch provision “includes, but is not limited to, inboard engines, outboard motors and sterndrive engines.” Switches also need to meet American Boat and Yacht Council Standards.

June 25, 2018: New On-Water Powerboat Training for Teens from the National Safe Boating Council

The National Safe Boating Council's teen training program is a pilot course for ages 13-19 interested in learning on-water powerboating skills and maneuvers. In partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and BoatU.S. Foundation, the teen training program is focused on teaching teens valuable safe boating lessons and preparing the next generation of safe boaters. During the on-water course, teens will be led through a step-by-step progression focusing on terminology, equipment, steering straight, stopping, turns up to 180-degree, docking, ferrying, avoidance turns, person overboard and retrieval. This program is produced under a grant from the Sports Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Using the adjective "grass-roots" has become quite the trend in recent years, and rightfully so. Things like grass-roots marketing and grass-roots political campaigns have made an impact in today's society, and the recreational boating safety community is no exception to this trend.

The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), a national non-profit organization, is just one of many nonprofits utilizing key methods and techniques in implementing grass-roots efforts nationwide--and it's seeing a real behavior change in recreational boaters because of it.

Emergency Locator Beacons Provide Life Saving Communication

A perfect day on the water can quickly change. A boat may hit an unseen object, a wave capsizes it, a sudden storm makes navigation impossible, or equipment fails. In situations like these, communication is key. Many boaters operate in locations beyond cell phone towers and the line-of-sight capabilities of their VHF radio, so owning and registering an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) can mean the difference between life and death.

NSBC Instructor Appointed to Prestigious Japan Coast Guard Advisory Group for Water Safety (November 29, 2016)

On November 29, 2016, Mr. Hiroshi Yamaoka a Maris foundation staff member was present at the Japan Coast Guard meeting. He provided a presentation on the benefits of standardization and educational outreach. As a Personal Water Craft (PWC) subject matter expert (SME), he was selected as one of four elect expert members whom were appointed to the newly formed "Ocean Safety Promotion Advisor."

Corporal Josh Underwood Receives 2016 Boating Safety Award (November 23, 2016)

Corporal (Cpl.) Underwood of the Saint Johns County Sheriff’s Office is the recipient of the 2016 NASBLA Boating Safety Award, sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), for his efforts to promote responsible boating throughout Florida. As Florida continues to be the top state for recreational boating deaths and accidents, this is no easy task. Cpl. Underwood’s dedication to the profession, and especially to boating safety, has made a positive change in the local boating community and boaters now know him know him as "the life jacket guy." Major Richard Moore, Boating Law Administrator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Chair of the NSBC, awarded Cpl. Underwood with this honor at the Saint Johns County Sheriff’s Office on November 18, 2016.

The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) has joined thousands of other organizations participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.
